480. Photo Graziano GRAZIANI230 was born on 13 Feb 1710 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.276 He died of "febbre maligna" on 29 Jun 1758 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.277 He was called Gratiano (no last name) on his 1710 baptismal certificate but Graziano Graziani on all subsequent documentation (on his 1731 marriage certificate the "z" is an "old-fashioned" one, but by his 1758 death certificate it is a "z" that would be recognized in the 21st century. I have listed him here as Graziano to distinguish him from his grandfather Gratiano. Graziano GRAZIANI and Camilla MAZZEI were married on 7 Jan 1731 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.278

481. Photo Camilla MAZZEI279,280 was born on 22 Dec 1705 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.281 Have used 22 Dec as birth date (baptism was on 23rd) because death certificate indicates this was birthdate. She died on 26 Jan 1779 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.282 The spelling of this family name changed in her lifetime. Clearly written Mazzei on her birth certificate in 1705, it is written Massei (but with an older configuration - Mafsei or Maßei - on her 1779 death certificate. It is not clear exactly how it's written on her wedding certificate in 1731 (see photo), but it's clearly written Maßei by the time of her son Amadeo's 1749 birth. The odd (to us) double consonant of 1731 is duplicated in her first cousin Elisabetta's 1724 baptismal certificate where "batezzata" is written in the identical script. On Elisabetta's brother Michele's 1712 baptismal certificate, however, the surname is clearly written "Massei" (with the now standard ss; baptized, meanwhile, is written "batteszata"), so the early 18th-century orthography is difficult to fathom. It seems to be a function of the priest as well as of the times. Children were:

Photo Amadeo/Amadio GRAZIANI was born on 20 Jun 1749 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.293 Listed as Amadeo on his baptismal certificate. He died on 5 Feb 1809 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.294

The spelling and pronunciation of his first name seems to have been an issue. He is referred to as "Amadeo" on both his 1749 baptismal and 1809 death certificates, but in between it gets interesting. On his 1770 marriage certificate the priest wrote "Amadeo volgarmente dº [detto] Amadio (Amadeo commonly called Amadio)." His name was written in 3 different ways on the baptismal certificates of the 13 children from his first marriage: "Amadeo" (#1, 3, 4 and 11), "Amadio" (# 2 and 13) and "Amadeo, o Amadio" (#5-10 and 12).

On his 2nd marriage certificate (1796) it is written "Amadio." The entire issue is curious: "Why was it so necessary to write both options in the official documents?" This is left as an exercise for the reader.
