(Pepe was in a column of the Civil Guard on its way to the Front, when several officers revolted, shot the leaders and many of the young [leftist] men accompanying the column. They spared Pepe but wondered why he hadn't fired. He fled, but was later captured in one of the Republican towns and jailed for being a member of the rebel column. When the town found out he had no part in it, he was freed and returned to Gata for the rest of the war.) He was in Franco's prison between 1939 and 1941 in Alicante, Spain.19,23 Después de la Guerra, los franquistas le condenaron a la cárcel por haber desertado la Guardia Civil. Per his son Julian, "the communists wanted to kill him, and the Franco government too.")
