Juana Peregrina FERNÁNDEZ GARCÍA3,5 was born on 27 December 1829 in Madrid, Spain.1,6 Bautizada en la parroquia de San Ildefonso. She may have been married to Domingo Castedo in Madrid, Spain. De la Rica says they were married October 1878, but per Madrid archivist Urbano Melendo, "de otros libros parroquiales y de Matrículas se desprende de que D. José Besteiro Guiza falleció en 1879 . . . " If this is the case, the marriage would not have taken place until at least 1880, probably later "si guardaban luto por Don José." In addition, in Dec. 1881 she is living with her children Ricardo, Carmen, Julián and Juana. Josefa and Emilio BESTEIRO GRACIANI's birth certificates state that Juana was a widow at the time of their 1884 and 1886 births. (Emilio's note: I'm not sure what this means about the putative 2nd marriage of Juana to Domingo CASTEDO: this entire second marriage of Juana, if it actually took place, is still surrounded by mystery . . . ) Juana died before Jorge BESTEIRO GRACIANI's birth in 1889. She lived at Calle de Milaneses 6, tienda in Madrid, Spain on 1 December 1881.7 Living in this household were her children Ricardo, Carmen, Julián and Juana as well as 3 dependents and 3 servants. Two of the dependents - Salvador Fernández Fernández and Manuel Castro Besteiro - had family names and were born in Lugo, the origin of Juana's family. Juana lived at Cava Baja 38 in Madrid, Spain in January 1883.8 This is from the birth certificate of her grandson Domingo BESTEIRO GRACIANI. She lived at Cava Baja, 1 in Madrid, Spain in June 1886.9 This is from the birth certificate of her son Emilio. She died between June 1886 and June 1889 at the age of 56 in Madrid, Spain.1,9,10,11 Lama de Espinosa claims that Juana died when her son Julián was about 16 (1886-87). Juana Peregrina FERNÁNDEZ GARCÍA and José Francisco BESTEIRO GUIZA were married before 1851. They lived at Costanilla de Santiago, 15, in Madrid, Spain between 1851 and 1873.6,12 Vivía [José] en Costanilla de Santiago, 15 con su esposa Juana, la madre Guiza y cuatro criados, cuyos nombres menciona. . . En esa misma casa, ocupando además el 2o piso, viven en 1873 José, Juana, Carmen, Julián, María y esposo Julián López y Herminia y ocho sirvientes. En 1874 no figuran en "S. Ginés." He opened a food store before 1850 in Madrid, Spain.15 José, tras años de ir y venir, adquirió un buen local en la mejor zona de Madrid . . . Estaba en la esquina de la Costanilla [de Santiago] con la calle de Milaneses. (Aquired a location in the best part of Madrid . . . ) He died about 1879 at the age of 60.1,3,10,12 From Josefa BESTEIRO GRACCIANI's 1884 birth certificate we know he was dead at the time of her birth. Lamo de Espinosa claims that José died when his son Julián was about 8 or 9 years old. Urbano Melendo (generally very accurate in his calculations) claims José died in 1879. Juan DE LA RICA CASTEDO claims that Juana married Domingo CASTEDO around 1878, after Jose's death. (Según Juan DE LA RICA CASTEDO, después de la muerte de José, Juana casó con el viudo de su hermana, Domingo CASTEDO.) Probably died in Madrid, although there is no documentation.
