3 CONC here to "Chesterfield", one of the so-called "cigarette camps", before r
3 CONC eturning home on the Queen Mary in the fall of 1945.

3 CONT 	Florida State University [FSU] Economics Professor William J. Serow, w
3 CONC ho taught internationally and consulted with many countries on their po
3 CONC pulation growth and demographic changes, died Nov. 5 in Halle, Germany, a
3 CONC t the age of 57.  Serow was in Germany as a guest lecturer and visiting f
3 CONC aculty member at Martin Luther Univesität Halle-Wittenberg in Halle.

3 CONT Until June of this year, Serow directed the FSU Center for the Study of P
3 CONC opulation, where he conducted research on the economics and demography o
3 CONC f aging, internal migration, and applied demography.  He also taught th
3 CONC e economics of population, applied economic demography and the economic
3 CONC s of aging for the FSU Department of Economics, and has published numer
3 CONC ous books and articles on demography.  He has served on the faculty at F
3 CONC SU since 1981.

3 CONT An avid world traveler, Serow consulted with foreign governments, inclu
3 CONC ding Indonesia and the Netherlands, was a professor at FSU's Florence, I
3 CONC taly, campus, and was a visiting professor at Technische Universität Da
3 CONC rmstadt in Darmstadt, Germany and at Charles University in Prague, Czec
3 CONC h Replublic.  A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Serow was a long-time Tallaha
3 CONC ssee resident who earned an A.B. in Economics from Boston College in 19
3 CONC 67, an M.A. in Economics from Duke University in 1970, and a Ph.D. in E
3 CONC conomics from Duke University in 1972.

3 CONT He was an active member of the Faculty and Friends Club of Florida Stat
3 CONC e University, and has served on the board of the Tallahassee Little The
3 CONC ater, was a member of Good Shepherd parish, and served (beyond the peri
3 CONC od required out of paternal duty) as the Cookie manager for Girl Scout t
3 CONC roop 232.

3 CONT He was a passionate (if disgruntled) fan of the Boston Red Sox and Broo
3 CONC klyn Dodgers, and loved all things pertaining to Sherlock Holmes, train
3 CONC s and train schedules, wine, and world travel.  He was an avid reader a
3 CONC nd puzzle solver and had an endless appetite for useless information, w
3 CONC hich he relished sharing with friends.

3 CONT He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Serow, also of Tallahassee, daugh
