José
(Tio Pepe) SIGNES MONFORT39
was born on 30 Jan 1891 in Gata de Gorgos, Alicante, Spain. He served
in the military about 1912 in Ceuta (Morocco), Málaga, Spain.40 Fue cabo en el regimiento de telégrafos. He immigrated
about 1917 to USA.5,41 He lived a brief period of time in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Sent a postcard to his father on 15 April 1917 from Washington, DC: "Padre,
He was a «Guardía
Civil» in Spain between 1919 and 1938.42
De Madrid fue a Cataluña, entonces Castellón. He was in a Republican
No tenían
(Pepe was in a column of the Civil Guard
on its way to the Front, when several officers revolted, shot the leaders and
many of the young [leftist] men accompanying the column. They spared Pepe but
wondered why he hadn't fired. He fled, but was later captured in one of the
Republican towns and jailed for being a member of the rebel column. When the
town found out he had no part in it, he was freed and returned to Gata for the
rest of the war.) He was in Franco's prison between 1939 and 1941 in Alicante,
(After the war, the Nationalists imprisoned
Pepe for desertion. Per his son Julian, "the communists wanted to kill him,
and the Franco government too.") Pepe's travails are summarized in "Tio
Pepe y la columna rebelde," edited by Emil SIGNES based on an interview
with Julián SIGNES QUEROL. He was imprisoned for nearly two years.
