the army between 1845 and 1850 in Spain.238
According to Juan Antonio DE LA RICA he served in the second Carlist war (c.
1847-1849). . He opened a food store before 1850 in Madrid, Spain.239 José, tras años de ir y venir, adquirió
un buen local en la mejor zona de Madrid . . . Estaba en la esquina de la Costanilla
[de Santiago] con la calle de Milaneses. (Aquired a location in the best part
of Madrid . . . ) He died about 1879 in Madrid, Spain?.72,167,236,240 From
Josefa BESTEIRO GRACCIANI's 1884 birth certificate we know he was dead at the
time of her birth. LAMO DE ESPINOSA claims that José died when his son Julián
was about 8 or 9 years old. Urbano MELENDO (generally very accurate in his calculations)
claims José died in 1879. Juan DE LA RICA CASTEDO claims that Juana married
Domingo CASTEDO around 1878, after Jose's death. (Según Juan DE LA RICA
CASTEDO, después de la muerte de José, Juana casó con el viudo
de su hermana, Domingo CASTEDO.) José Francisco BESTEIRO GUIZA and Juana
Peregrina FERNÁNDEZ GARCÍA were married before 1851. They
lived at Costanilla de Santiago, 15, in Madrid, Spain between 1851 and 1873.167 Vivía [José] en
Costanilla de Santiago, 15 con su esposa Juana, la madre Guiza y cuatro criados,
cuyos nombres menciona. . . En esa misma casa, ocupando además el 2o piso,
viven en 1873 José, Juana, Carmen, Julián, María y esposo Julián
López y Herminia y ocho sirvientes. En 1874 no figuran en "S. Ginés."
They lived at C / Mayor, 85, in Madrid, Spain in 1877.167 Los mismos que en 1874 [sic, ¿1873?], excepto

de la Rica, Juana was about 12 years younger than José. She died about
1886 in Madrid, Spain.72,236 Josefa BESTEIRO GRACCIANI's birth certificate states
that Juana was a widow at the time of Josefa's birth in 1884. Lama de Espinosa
claims that Juana died when her son Julián was about 16. (Emilio's note:
I assume this means that if Juana had married Domingo CASTEDO, that he would
have died by 1884 . . . or? . . . The entire second marriage of Juana is still
surrounded by mystery . . . )

puts the address at «la Costanilla de Santiago, 16, 4º principal, viviendo
en la próxima calle de Milaneses, 2, en un piso propiedad de su padre»,
Don Urbano MELENDO's research putting the family address at 15 is certainly
correct. Nevertheless, despite the general assumption that he was born in Madrid,
there has been a case made for his birth in Galicia, as reported in the Enciclopedia
gallega: «M. da Rivas Reija en un trabajo inédito del que hay publicado
un resumen (La Voz de Galicia, 30-IX-1973), intenta demostrar que nació
en la casa solar de su padre, en la parroquia de Franqueán (O Corgo-Lugo),
el día 15, fue trasladado a Madrid y registrado como nacido allí el
día 21. Su familia pertenecía a la pequeña burguesía mercantil
acomodada.» He was baptized on 24 Sep 1870 in Madrid, Spain.253,254
He was educated at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza from 1879 in
Madrid, Spain.236 «La
influencia que la Institución Libre de Enseñanza había de ejercer
en Besteiro es incalculable.» He was educated «en la Facultad de Filosofía

He sent to prison for his beliefs, «por los conceptos vertidos contra
el ejército» in 1911 in Madrid, Spain. He was elected as
City Councilman between 1914 and 1918 in Madrid, Spain. He active
participant in national strike, sentenced to jail but saved by general amnesty
in 1917 in Madrid, Spain. He was elected as member of parliament
[Cortes] from Madrid in 1918 in Madrid, Spain. He was elected as
President of Parliament, immediately following the proclamation of the Republic
in 1931 in Madrid, Spain.
He signed a will in 1933 in Madrid, Spain.248

He was elected as member of parliament in the general elections with the highest
vote total in Feb 1936 in Madrid, Spain. He one of the "Council of
Defense" that surrendered Madrid to Franco in Mar 1939 in Madrid, Spain.252 "En todo momento, y enfermo,
rechaza la salida de Madrid y prefiere «Quedarse con su pueblo, corriendo
la misma suerte.»"
He arrested, brought to trial and condemned to prison on 28 Mar 1939 in Madrid,
Spain.255 "El 28
de marzo, en los Sótanos del Ministerio de Hacienda, donde se constituye
el Juzgado, se le toma declaración indagatoria y se decreta su prisión,
que comienza en las primeras horas de aquella noche por su traslado a la "Cárcel
de Porlier." He was moved among 4 different prisons between 28 Mar 1939

la carcel el dia 27 del actual a las trece a consecuencia de fiebres parotideas
según resulta de la certificación facultativa y reconocimiento practicado,
su cadáver habrá de recibir sepultura en el Cementerio de esta Ciudad».
