11. Francisco (Frasquito) GRACIANI PASTOR1,28,47,48 was born on 11 August 1832 in Alicante, Spain.1,28 Full name: Francisco de Asís. We know his nickname thanks to a letter Isabel BESTEIRO GRACCIANI wrote to Carmen LAGOS BESTEIRO. US & Cuban family tradition had him born in the north of Italy, perhaps Genoa, but it was in fact his father, not he, that came from Italy (Lucca). He was baptized on 13 August 1832 in Alicante, Spain.28 Bautizado en la Parroquia de S. Nicolás Insigne Iglesia Colegial de la Ciudad de Alicante. Padrinos: Raymundo Samper y María Burañes.

He appeared in the census in 1855–1857 at C/ del Noviciado 4 in Madrid, Spain.29 In 1855 & 1856 Francisco, his sister Leocadia, and their mother Dolores PASTOR were among the residents of the bottom floor (cuarto bajo). In 1857 Francisco and his mother lived in the ground floor apartment (puerta de calle tienda). In the 1855 census Francisco and Leocadia's surname was misspelled as "Cristiani" but this is clearly wrong.

In the 1858 census Francisco was specifically referred to as Italian, baptized in Lucca (which he wasn't).

Francisco lived at Calle del Noviciado, 4 in Madrid, Spain between 1855 and 1859. From 1/1/1855 to 1/1/1857 he was single and living with his mother; on 1/1/1858 he was married (name of other person in same apartment is illegible but presumably his wife Joaquina LORENZO). On 1/1/1859 he was living with his wife Joaquina, son Joaquín and a "figurero" and and"escultor," both 20 years old; one was from Lucca; the other's hometown was unclear.

Francisco likely had been resident in Madrid since 1852 or 1853: the 1855 census noted that he'd been resident in Madrid 18 months, and the 1859 census said 7 years. Según los padrones había vivido en Madrid desde 1852 o 1853.

He was a sculptor in Spain.1,49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,59 According to census data, from 1858 to 1882 he was, in various years, a "moldeador," a "moldeador maestro," an "escultor" or "escultor maestro," or an "estatuario" ([master] molder or [master] sculptor). Isabel BESTEIRO GRACCIANI wrote to Carmen LAGOS BESTEIRO, "My grandfather signed his works F. GRAZZIANI. I was told that his works were seen at an exhibition in San Francisco. My mother was born in Alcalá [1862] because at the time my grandfather was working on a restoration at the cathedral and because of that moved his family there temporarily."

He died between 18 June 1889 and 1 December 1890 in Madrid, Spain.1,60,61 Isabel BESTEIRO GRACCIANI notes that he died about 7 years before her 1896 birth. This corresponds with the fact that he was alive for his grandson Jorge BESTEIRO GRACCIANI's birth on 18 June 1889 and that his wife was listed as a widow on 1 December 1890. As of 2009 I (Emil SIGNES) have still not found his death certificate.

Francisco (Frasquito) GRACIANI PASTOR and Joaquina LORENZO BLAS were married in 1857. Date is based on the fact that Francisco was listed as single on 1 Jan 1857 and married as of 1 Jan 1858; their first child, Joaquín, was born in May 1858.

They lived in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain in 1862. According to the family history they moved here so Francisco could work on the restauration of the cathedral. This is where their daughter Victorina was born. (The Alcalá records of this period were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.)

They appeared in the census between 1871 and 1882 in Madrid, Spain.49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,59,62 Spelled GRACIANI from 1871 through 1881, Francisco's surname was spelled GRAZIANI on the 1882 census.

The family was specifically referred to as "Italian" in the 1873, 1877 and 1882 census. In 1882 there was a note appended stating "Matriculados comos subditos al Rey de Italia este matrimonio y su hijo." (Joaquín was the only child living at home that year.)

Francisco and Joaquina49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,59,62 lived at Calle del Colmillo nueve, tienda in Madrid, Spain between 1871 and 1889.49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,59,60,62 They didn't live there in 1870 but they did in 1871, and they still lived there when their grandson Jorge BESTEIRO GRACIANI was born on 18 June 1889. This street, which has been called Pérez Galdós since 1899, lies between the streets of Fuencarral and Hortaleza.

Joaquina LORENZO BLAS1,63,64 was born on 6 March 1837 in Villar del Cobo, Teruel, Spain.61,64
Her birth year on various documents varies between 1837 and 1844. On her death certificate (1910) it remarks that she was 73, so I (Emil SIGNES) have selected the 1837 date. It appears that both Joaquina and her daughter Victorina - as well as Joaquina's mother-in-law Dolores PASTOR - had trouble being honest about their age.

She was baptized about 1837 in Villar del Cobo, Teruel, Spain.49,53 In the 1871 Madrid census she was listed as having been baptized in the parish of San Cayetano; in 1875 it said San Lorenzo. She lived as a youngster in Valencia, Spain. Isabel BESTEIRO GRACCIANI writes: «mi abuela Joaquina fué huérfana desde niña y se crió con una tia llamada Victorina en Valencia. Esta tía tenía una fábrica de cordones de seda para cortinas, ropas de iglesia, teatros, etc. Fué la madrina de mi madre [Victorina GRACIANI LORENZO] y esta llevaba su nombre.» (Joaquina was orphaned as a child and lived with her tía Victorina in Valencia. Victorina had a silk rope factory and was godmother to Victorina GRACIANI LORENZO, Joaquina's daughter.)

Joaquina appeared in the census on 1 December 1890 in Madrid, Spain.61 She was living with her niece Joaquina LORENZO GÓMEZ at C/Trujillo 3, principal. She visited Cuba when her daughter Victorina became pregnant (at age 45). in 1908 .1 She went to Cuba to try to convince her daughter Victorina to have the child in Spain, but returned to Spain when it became clear she would not. (Fué a Cuba en 1908 cuando se embarazó su hija Victorina a 45 años. Quería que Victorina volviese a España, pero Victorina rechazó la oferta y su madre volvió a España.) She lived in Villar del Cobo, Teruel, Spain in 1910.64 Joaquina died on 1 August 1910 in Villar del Cobo, Teruel, Spain.64 "Murió en su domicilio a consecuencia de catarro gástrico . . . "
