Atlantis tournaments / return to Atlantis home

Notes of 2013: As a follow-up to our sponsored Thursday evening event, US All Stars vs. Celtic All Stars, in Bethlehem's High School stadium, we held a four-team event on Sunday October 9, incorporating two Atlantis teams, the Saltires, and the Duck Brothers. I have no notes of this other than the rosters and results.  Atlantis 1 beat Atlantis 2 and the Duck Brothers but lost to the Saltires in the tournament final.  Atlantis 1 lost all 3 games.

Here are the rosters (because we were short total numbers, both Tom Brewer and Chris Petrakes played for both teams):

Atlantis 1:

98 Tom Brewer, Union County
36 Will Brewington, Duck Brothers
28 Mark Gaejten, NOVA
94 Kevin Higgins, OMBAC
31 Chris Petrakes, MOB
99 John Redmond, MOB
95 Tony Ridnell, OPSB
48 Mike Siano, Philadelphia-Whitemarsh
72 Tommy Smith, Santa Monica

Atlantis 2:

98 Tom Brewer, Union County
100 Rob Farley, Philadelphia-Whitemarsh
101 Von Freudenberg, Virginia Beach
 31 Chris Petrakes, MOB
   8 Dave Priestas, Bethlehem
102 Bill Russell, U. Virginia
 15 Joe Taranto, Union County
103 Reggie Tift, Philadelphia-Whitemarsh
104 (un-remembered)

June 10, 2013: I just found this article that I wrote shortly afterwards that describes this second round of the Celtic Fest. It looks as though I wrote it to Randy Lieberman of Rugby Magazine but I don't think it ever saw print.

Randy: here's a summary of Sunday's results, per your
request.  Also, there were 1200 tickets sold at the gate on
Thursday, and the official count was 1500 in attendance.

               Saltires win Rubber Match

After getting trounced by, then tying, the American All-Stars
on Thursday night, the Saltires finished their tour with a
24-18 Sunday win in what was essentially an overtime match.

     Preliminary matches

In preliminary games, the Saltires defeated Atlantis, 30-6,
and the Duck Brothers 26- , while the All-Stars defeated the
same two teams 34-0 and 20-4, respectively.

     Saltires vs. American All-Stars

In the final match, missing Kevin Higgins, Mark Williams,
Barry Williams, and Gary Lambert, the American All-Stars
added John Redmond of the Maryland Old Boys and Mark Gaetjen
of the Duck Brothers to center and wing, respectively.

The Americans scored first when Tommy Smith surprised the
Saltires with a "wrong side" kickoff that rolled nearly to
the goal line.  The Saltires botched up the resulting lineout
throw in, and Chris Petrakes thanked them for the try.

It was all Saltires till early in the 2nd half, as Scotland
winger (and 10.6 100-meter man) Derek Stark smoked around
everyone for two tries, and Gala flyhalf Jim Maitland
finished off a good break to give the Saltires an 18-6 lead.

Tony Ridnell got the All-Stars back in the game with a wicked
stiff arm and 25-meter run to make the score 18-12.  On the
ensuing kickoff, Ridnell won the ball and passed directly
back to Mike Siano, who broke three tackles and got into the
opposition 22-meter area, where he passed to John Redmond for
the score.  Tommy Smith's conversion tied the game.

Time had run out, but referee Peter Simpson decided to ignore
his watch and play till the next score.  After a penalty
against Will Brewington for tackling a Saltire who had just
fallen on the ball, the Saltires spun the ball to Stark, who
ran around Gaetjen.  When he reached Tommy Smith, who had
covered from the other side of the field, Stark moved the
ball back in to center Harry Hogg who ran the last 30 meters
     unmolested.

Although the Americans filled in the center and wing spot
with quality players, it is difficult to replace a Kevin
Higgins and a Barry Williams, and the Saltires played much
stronger at the center and wing positions than they had on
     Thursday night.
