Background and
Summary
Salt Lake City, July 29-30,
2016. Atlantis fielded three sides in the Elite High
School U18 Division at the incredibly high-level North American
Invitational sevens tournament in Salt Lake City on July 29 and
30, 2016: a girls U18 side, and two boys' sides, one U18 and one
U17. Although there was no U17 bracket, members of one of
our boys' teams were all at least one year younger than their
bracket's U18 criteria, looking forward to, as well as success
this year, success next year, when all these players will still be
eligible.
The boys had an undefeated first day, and in Saturday's quarters,
but both fell in the semifinals and met each other in the 3rd
place game. We had hoped to meet each other in the
tournament's last round, but were shooting for gold and not
bronze.
Keith McLean, one of the boys' coaches, provided a team-full of
Atlantis pork-pie hats, and here are the two teams of HS boys at a
local mall for lunch, showing off their high fashion accessories:
as well as the hat, a T shirt with Roman numerals spelling out the
year of Atlantis' founding (MCMLXXXVI) and a classical Greek
temple architecturally designed so that four columns in the shape
of a "VII" are perfectly supporting the pediment.

The girls' team lost a ton of its original players to the HS All
American teams that crushed Canada in MD on the same day as the
NAI 7s. Nevertheless, we filled those spots with great athletes
who lacked only the experience of the original squad. Our girls
came together more quickly than most would expect, and only a
tough 7-5 loss to Play Rugby resulted in a 4th place finish.

It's always tough getting pictures of all squads together because
everyone is warming up, etc, at different times. So -
immediately after the boys' 3rd-4th place match I raced around to
get all the girls to jump in the picture, BUT except for Julia,
Grace and Kelsey, they had all left... After all these years,
you'd think I'd figure it out... :( ...
