Second Generation

7. Flavio GRAZIANI2,36,37 was born on 1 February 1797 in Pescaglia [Villabuona], Lucca, Toscana, Italy.19,38,39

According to a 1978 note from Antonio GRACIANI VÁZQUEZ to Ramón GRACIANI RUIZ, Flavio was born in "Vilabona, provincia de Lucca (Italia)". Villabuona is part of the parish of Pescaglia, where his baptism record is found. As one of his sisters was baptized in Villabuona (due to bad weather), it is pretty certain that Flavio was born here as well. He was born at 9 PM.

He was baptized on 2 February 1797 in Pescaglia, Lucca, Toscana, Italy.39 He immigrated between 1815 and 1827 to Spain.2,36,38

According to family lore, Flavio was a revolutionary of the left, a refugee from one of the Italian revolutions in the 1820-1830 time frame. Esperanza GRACIANI CASTILLA said in her branch of the family it was believed he was one of 4 brothers, of whom 2 went to the Americas and 2 stayed in Spain. Ramón GRACIANI RUIZ believed he came with a cousin. As of now (2006) the only two we know that went to Spain were Flavio and his [only] brother Romano. (Possibly two of Flavio's sons left for the Americas - we know nothing of Andrés nor Antonio.)

We also know from the life of Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini that in April 1821, at the age of 16, he was deeply moved when, in Genoa, he met escaping revolutionaries from the failed Piedmontese insurrection; they were fleeing to Spain. Romano and Flavio may well have been part of this group.

We also know that a relative, Clemente GRAZIANI (a cousin of their father's but born in 1792), died in Corsica in September 1821. Could he have been part of all this?

Flavio's son Domingo was born in 1828, so he would have arrived by then. Flavio died before 1871.40 (Note of possible interest: on the day following Flavio's birth, there was another birth in Pescaglia, of a Flavia GRAZIANI. They were great-great-great grandchildren of two distinct people called Gratiano GRATIANI, both apparently the origin of the surname in their respective lines. It does not, however, appear that there is any relationship between the two lines ... Based on parish data, Flavio's branch lived in Villabuona; Flavia's in an area of Pescaglia called "el Poggio." <Flavia, whose name follows Flavio's on the list of baptisms, died the day after her birth. It's unlikely that this was pure coincidence.>)

Flavio GRAZIANI and Paula MARTÍN were married before 1828 in Aranjuez, Madrid, Spain. Paula MARTÍN36 was born in Aranjuez, Madrid, Spain.41 She was living on 1 June 1871 in Andújar, Jaén, Spain.40 She died after 1871.42
