Here are profiles of each player; they are from different
sources, thus some with more detail than others:
Malery
Wendy Billingy, 15, was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.
She attends the High School of Fashion Industries. She has
been playing rugby for nearly 4 years; she has also
participated in track & field, mixed martial arts and
lacrosse. Malery's favorite color is black.
Megan Bird, 15, is a tenth grader at Oak Creek HS (WI)
where she plays rugby.
Jordan Cowan, 15, was born in South Africa and
therefore has rugby in her blood. She lived in Munich, Germany
for 7 years before moving to the USA 4 years ago. She plays
for Morris Rugby (and NJ Blaze 7s) and plays various
positions. She also plays Varsity field hockey for her
school, Jefferson Township HS (NJ).
Alex DiMarco, 14, is a freshman at Episcopal Academy,
and plays for the Downington Rugby Club (PA). She represented
the Rugby PA All Stars at the New York Sevens in 2014.
She also plays soccer and lacrosse. (Emil note: I coached
her father Wayne when he played for Philadelphia/Whitemarsh.)
Giovanna Ferguson is the
captain and oldest player on the team, having turned 16 the
week before we played; from Brooklyn, she is a junior at
Brooklyn Technical HS. At her middle school, I.S. 392, rugby
was introduced to her with many different variations, then
developed into flag rugby. She is currently Play Rugby
USA's Academy Captain looking after both the U19 Girls team
and Boys team. Under her there are two playing Captains
(a boy and a girl). Gio plays flanker in 15s and center in 7s
and leadership, defense and ball carrying are her strengths.
She was part of Play Rugby USA's state winning side and 2
summer series 7s League wins. She was selected for the
NJ/NY All Star team in the summer of 2014.
Maya Grassi, 15, is a
freshman at Haverford HS (PA) and plays for the North Penn
Valkyries. She has been playing since 6th grade as a scrum
half/fly half. She also plays softball. Maya got involved
because her older sister played and her father coaches (Emil
note: I coached her father Rob when he played for
Philadelphia/Whitemarsh). Rugby PA All Star
player.
Emily Henrich is a
15 year old 9th grader at Orchard Park (a suburb of
Buffalo, NY) HS and she plays for Orchard Park Rugby
Club. After watching both her mommy and daddy play
rugby as a child, her own rugby career began as a 6 year
old playing flag rugby over the border in Canada (for the
Niagara Wasps). She is a competitive freestyle skier and
also plays soccer and basketball for her high school.
Emil's note: I coached both Emily's parents - Chris at
Philadelphia/Whitemarsh in the late 90s and Lisa for
Atlantis (#331) in 1996; Emily is the first daughter of
a female Atlantis player to also represent
Atlantis. I wrote a little article on their joint
participation in the 2014 NY 7s: http://www.atlantisrugby.com/news/atlantis-mom-daughter-star-olde-love-ny-sevens-social-division-champions.
Allie Mennella, 15, is
a sophomore at Montville Township High School. She
plays for Morris Rugby (15s) and NJ Blaze (7s):
Morris Rugby won the state championship the past two years
and placed 2nd at nationals in the B division. NJ
Blaze won the high school division of the CRCs this year.
Allie has been playing rugby since she was five with the
Montville Wanderers flag rugby program, moving along to
tackle rugby as a freshman in high school. She
played travel soccer from 2nd - 8th grades and also plays
soccer for Montville Township High School, but rugby is
her main sport. Allie also loves to cook!
Jessica Nagie is a 15-year-old
tenth grader at Roxbury High School in New Jersey, and
plays for Morris Rugby Club. She started rugby at the
flag level at age 6 and has been in love with the
sport ever since. She also plays the trombone
and is involved in numerous musical pursuits.
Alie Ramage, 15, is a freshman at
Roxbury High School and plays for Morris Rugby /
NJ Blaze. She also plays soccer, track and
gymnastics. She got involved after watching her
sister (Kat Ramage, Atlantis #974 and HS All
American) play for two years. Her first rugby game
was a complete surprise, the team was at a
tournament in Maryland (winter of 2013) and short
a few players, Tess Feury (Atlantis #971) called
asking Alie to make the four hour drive and join
the team for the weekend - three weeks after her
practice. She's been playing and loving the sport
ever since.
Erin Scott-Williams turned 15
just days before the Las Vegas Invitational. She's a freshman
at Summit HS in Breckenridge, CO and plays flyhalf for their
JV team.
Elizabeth Wilson,
15, has played on U19 tackle rugby teams since
she was in the 7th grade. She also played 4
years of touch rugby beginning at the age of
8. Liz currently plays for the U19 SYC
Ruckettes, a 15 player rugby union side in
Virginia that is coached by Matt Estes. The
SYC Ruckettes were the 2014 Virginia State
Champions. Liz was the MVP of the 2014
Challenge Cup in Pittsburgh, PA, at the
Eastern Regional All Stars Rugby
tournament. She was also the youngest
player to participate in the 2014 USA Stars
and Stripes camp in Colorado. Elizabeth also
played travel soccer for 9 years.
