Division;

Note: there are 3 Appendices to this report. Appendix 1 is a roster
of all 118 Atlantis players in the tournament, along with
relevant information. The players from all 10 squads are
listed. The squad numbers are a continuation of
a nearly 30-year list of squads beginning with Squad 1, the
first Atlantis team, runners-up at the 1986 Harvard Sevens.
Marcus Maffei, a coach to the Boys U-16, was a member of
Atlantis Squad 1 and is Atlantis player #6.
Appendix 2 lists scores
of every game Atlantis played at LVI, 55 of them. Appendix 3 lists links to
game videos that were taken and provided to us; the majority
of the games.
Atlantis had a lot of firsts to be proud of at the 2015 Las Vegas
Invitational tournament: the first time we fielded 10 squads, the
first U-16 teams, and the first LVI championship. With a
combined record of 34-21 we upped our nearly 29-year record to
772-333-11. As the self-appointed "Emperor" of Atlantis I
gathered a bunch of fabulous coaches and let them pick their
players and staff, and watched them as a fan.
We fielded 118 distinct players, 87 of them making their first
Atlantis appearance. Surprisingly, there were no "long time"
Atlanteans on any of the squads; Lauren Rhode, Atlantis #898,
having served the longest. But her first appearance came only 2
1/2 years ago at a local tournament in Bethlehem, PA.
Atlantis'
prolific participation needs to be understood within the
enormity of the entire LVI enterprise: the Las Vegas
Invitational Tournament comprised 20 distinct divisions with 270
teams (and therefore approximately 4500 players and probably
more than 1000 staff). Nearly 600 games - 593 to be exact
(including 51 15-a-side games) - were officiated by 120
different referees. They were played on 22 fields at 3
locations: both the Silver Bowl and Star Nursery fields were
within a short distance of Sam Boyd Stadium, but the third set,
at Heritage Park, was about a 20-minute drive.
Organizing the USA Sevens international tournament had to be a
walk in the park compared to this. Kudos to Jon Hinkin for
not only organizing all of the week's activities, but putting up
with a zillion inquiries regarding just about everything to do
with the tournament. I know because I think I asked half
of them. Well done, Jon!
Overall
Atlantis staff were Biddy Boyle, General Manager, and Dan
Currie, Event Manager, and I, as self-appointed Atlantis
Emperor. Dan organized our group dinner Thursday night;
Biddy and I traveled back and forth during the entire
tournament trying to keep tabs on everything that was going on
at all sets of fields. Atlantis played on 12 different fields
spread out among all 3 locations.
If you only had one team - or possibly a couple depending on
where they played - you could set up camp and hang out all
day. For us, mostly it was impossible to travel without
missing a game; often there were 3 or 4 of our teams playing
at the same time, on only a very rare occasion two at the same
time where it was possible to glance at one game then another
while standing in one place. And of course all fields
were backed up a different amount of time so scheduling what
to watch when was tough.
I knew all our teams were in capable hands and that I didn't
need to be there. But I wanted to be there; I wish I
could have seen all of them play all of their games... In the
end I probably saw at least part of more than 20 of the 55
games.

SCHEDULE

schedule of their team's events.

OTHER BRIEF COMMENTS

Summarize
Dates of events (each squad)
Just about all participants were housed in the tournament hotel,
the Riviera. (Say something about Riviera?)
There was only one event which all participants - players and
staff - were asked to attend; several parents attended as well.
This was an Atlantis Squads Dinner at Circus Circus, a large hotel
across the street from the Riviera, on Thursday evening.
Great event >100 players! plus staff etc and parents ...
I've included the largest-ever Atlantis team picture; other
pictures from the event may be found below.
(find pix!)
Activities - brief sentence, then include under each team's
writeup. (e.g. U16 met Bokke - show clip, one of them born in
Jo-burg ... )
Games --
Show some action pix - mention championships, finals U-16 girls
accomplishments, also boys U-16- briefly; leave most to individual
team section.
