It wasn't till the last moment (less than a couple weeks before the tourney) that we were sure we were going, and it took some magic by Mike Romano of Frosch Travel to get us affordable fares. We took off from a lot of different cities; most of us met in Atlanta, and the entire team - except Elena, who got in in time to play about half the tournament - was together by the Seoul Airport (a 15 hour flight from Atlanta). We flew together to Kota Kinabalu (KK), in Malaysian Borneo.  We arrived Tuesday night November 4 and met up with our liaisons Fion and Tresia. Although it was nearly midnight and we'd had a long trip, it was only noon in the Eastern US, so we paid a quick visit to a pub across the street from our accommodations, the Pirates of Borneo.

Right: Sarah with sign at our residence.  I don't remember if we obeyed.

The next morning we wandered out, changed our  dollars for Malaysian ringgits (about 3 to the dollar), and went to a breakfast place recommended by Fion and Tresia for true local breakfast. Many of us had "mee goreng," fried noodles with shrimp, beans, garlic, some spices, yummy.

After breakfast, we headed to Manukan Island, part of a Malaysian marine national park, just off the coast of KK. It's a really nice place with several beaches, dense vegetation,  amenities for tourists ... and a soccer field, where we practiced.  Following practice we were able to jump in the water, wander through the jungle - where we saw lots of little creatures (and one medium-size one).

When we got back from our walk, Fion and Tresia, who were watching our kit and listening to the radio, told us that
Obama had won the US presidency.

Prior to practice, my explanations seem to elicit rapt attention (honest, it wasn't posed:)
We practiced the rest of the morning

Lunch on Manukan Island

While we were on Manukan Island we saw some remnants of World War II, bombs and bomb fragments.

Remnants of bombs
Borneo was a World War II battleground and these bomb remnants were found on Manukan Island
Later in the week we visited an old POW camp in Sandakan - nasty experience for the mostly Aussie prisoners

We had a few hours' free time in town; some people did a little shopping, a few jumped in the hotel at our residence and relaxed.  In the evening we were guided by Fion and Tresia to the KK night market.  Part of it is a huge food court with people grilling and cooking all kinds of food, and crowded with customers. We picked our food, and ate, sitting across from and chatting with a local who had spent a year at the University of Iowa. It was one of the tour highlights and, just as the Manukan Island trip, it wouldn't have happened without our liaisons.

Click here for a little sense of the ambiance at the market (ignore the music, it's from my highlight film).

Following dinner we stopped and picked up a few beers and stopped by the residence pool where - if my memory serves me right - we had our first fine session.

Left: Don't be fooled by the label. "MIX FRUIT JELLY" is actually a case of Tsingtao.
Right: Indulging my need to buy postcards everywhere

We concluded the evening with a fine session (fine as in penalty, not as in very good); the first full day of tour had been a busy and fruitful one.  We'd had
a) a local breakfast,
b) a boat trip to an island with beaches and a mini-jungle ... and a soccer field,
c) a rugby practice,
d) a dip in the South China Sea,
e) a walk in the jungle,
f) an update on US news,
g) a local lunch,
h) some time to ourselves,
i) a dip in the apartment pool,
j) dinner at a Bornean night market,
l) a stop in a local mall,
l) a couple of beers back at the hotel, and finally
m) a fine session.

Fine session
Final picture of the evening: a reaction to some ridiculous fine, I'm sure
