But still no Ele
na.

Our first two games featured 40-0 and 42-0 routs of the two Kuala Lumpur teams, which called themselves "Dingaling" and "Mandinga." I no longer have a record of which individuals scored in our games, but they were easy; it was clear early on that neither of these two teams would present much of a threat. And in between, Elena arrived! Here are videos of the games:

Atlantis 42 Mandinga 0

We finished the day's play with a match against the best team there: Thailand.  The Thai women always play excellent rugby and play regularly in Hong Kong.  The US national team can beat them, because we're just as fast and bigger and stronger, but if you can't match their speed the Thais are great: they make their tackles, they get the ball to space, and they finish.

We held them to 0-0 for the longest time before they broke the drought.  It didn't help that our captain was yellow-carded for a high tackle.  (As a general comment, I remember that that ref's behavior was very frustrating.) The yellow card was in the middle of the second half with the score 0-5.  They scored two tries while she was out, and another just as she came in. The final score was 0-22.

The videos of the three games may be found here.

Following the day's games we realized we'd have to play a lot better to beat the Thais in the final. Today's yellow card certainly didn't help, but they outplayed us besides that, and we couldn't touch their speed.  And - especially considering they're a very small team, their tackling was great!

Saturday evening we had dinner at the Sandakan Rugby Club complex and watched some video as well.  We also got together with the K-L girls for a joint picture.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9

Our first game on Sunday was a rematch of our second game yesterday and resulted in a comparable 41-0 victory.  The next game was the final, a rematch between us and Thailand, but before that the rains started to pelt down.  We didn't get the worst of it, but it was still quite a rainy final and there was lots of water on the field.

In the end this was not as close as the first game and in 10-minute halves the Thais were 27-0 winners.

The two games we played today may be found here:

Following the tournament we prepared to head to the party. Most of our team - Mike and I included - went in sarongs, though we didn't get full participation (I no longer remember where or how Mike and I got ours). I got one of the K-L coaches, Amil, to show me how to get mine on properly.

Off to the party. Team in sarongs. Well, mostly.

The party was excellent.  The tournament provided professional entertainment, and then most of the teams got up to entertain each other as well.  We had some brief skit that I no longer remember, and also joined some of the other players in trying to walk and even dance on some narrow beams, ala the Flying Wallendas.
